In 2011 we identified as tires are a huge problem and unnecessary burden on the environment. The Problem and Inspiration: Burning tires release many toxic soups of pollutants. It is a very risky for the environment, humans as well as wildlife. Open tire fire emissions are estimated to be 16 times more mutagenic than residential wood combustion in a fireplace, and 13,000 times more mutagenic than coal-fired utility emissions with good combustion efficiency and add-on controls.

India’s waste tires account for about 6-7% of the global total. The local tire industry is growing at 12% per annum and in future, it is going to grow with the higher rate. 

Though India is into recycling and reusing waste tires for a long time, yet 60% to 65%  waste tires are disposed of through illegal dumping. 

How we took this challenge : 

We originated the idea in 2011 and started experimenting the waste tires and inner tubes creatively to develop some user-friendly products. Though these products were not really finished gradually we moved ahead and understood the problems of the material and achieved desired finish and quality.

Initially, there were three challenges: 

1. Sourcing of the tire tube 

2. Craftmanship of the product 

3. Looking for the right market and audience 

When we had to make products in bulk then the sourcing of the tire tube was one of the major tasks. Through our personal interaction with puncture shops and national highway truck drivers, we could build a good relationship and network for finding the right kind of waste tire tube for further upcycling and product development. 

Craftmanship was a learning by doing activity. We did several mistakes and by doing the wrong things we actually got the right path and process. Over the period we have developed our own unique upcycling process which is the heart of Ecowings and because of that people are loving Ecowings bags and accessories across the world. 

So far thousands of tire tubes have been converted into highly fashionable products and accepted by the people worldwide. Today Ecowings has become an ethical shopping center with compassionate products. Process : 

To develop a unique upcycled vegan bags following steps are covered: 90 % Activities are done through skilled hands with great precision and patience.

a. Collection of used tire tubes from different puncture shops 

b. Sorting and washing of the tire tubes 

c. Converting tire tubes into a finished surface 

d. Drafting and cutting of these in suitable forms 

e. Stitching of the final product as per design

f. Quality check and control
